PlayStation 5
2020
Launch & Origins
Games
PlayStation 5 began development two years after the release of the PlayStation 4, during this time PlayStation implemented a feedback cycle that looked to address any of the PlayStation 4 shortcomings.

The PlayStation 5 was officially announced in April of 2019 and unveiled in June 11, 2020. PlayStation 5 would eventually launch on November 12, 2020.

The PlayStation 5 had major hardware updates over the PlayStation 4 with the addition of it's SSD which meant ultra fast loading times and read/write speeds. The PS5 offers up to 8K gaming resolution and a 120hz refresh rate, doubling that of the previous 60hz performance of the PlayStation 4.

At launch there were two options for the PlayStation 5, one for physical media with an Ultra HD Blu Ray disc drive and a fully digital version which came in at a lower cost. The PlayStation 5 is also backwards compatible with PlayStation 4 titles.
The PlayStation 5 library has many exclusives games like Astro Bot, Astro's Playroom, Demon's Souls, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and Silent Hill 2 Remake.

Similar to Xbox, PlayStation has also started to release it's exclusives to PC and games that were traditionally only on PlayStation can now be played across PC, meaning God of War, Spiderman and many other beloved games could now be experienced without needing to own a PlayStation console.
PS5 Portal
The PlayStation Portal was released in 2022 as a way to remotely play your PlayStation 5. The PlayStation Portal even received a PlayStation 30th Anniversary release showcasing the original PlayStation color scheme.
Dominance
DualSense Edge
The PlayStation 5 has dominated the ninth generation, outselling the Xbox Series S/X 3 to 1. This is often the accredited reason as to why Microsoft ventured away from the console space and started to focus on the software end of their business with Xbox Game Pass. As of 2025 Xbox announced that it would be releasing Xbox exclusives on the PlayStation platform and that it would no longer hold any console exclusive titles. A similar move was taken place by PlayStation as they have slowly rolled out PlayStation exclusives now on PC.
In August 2022 Sony announced that they were working on an DualSense controller with further capabilities than the standard issued DualSense. The controller launched initially on January 26, 2023 through PlayStation Direct and eventually on February 23, 2023 across all other retailers. The DualSense Edge features a more advanced controller with rear paddle buttons, adjustable trigger lengths, multiple control profiles as well as customizable mapping inputs, and the ability to play at an ultra low latency via a lockable braided USB-C cable.
