The Sega Genesis was released around the start of the "console wars"; a time of incredible innovation in the video game industry that lead titanic sized competition between competing companies. At the time of it's release the Sega Genesis basically had double the performance of the NES and provided a more mature lineup of games therefore attracting older gamers, of course Nintendo shot back with the release of the Super Nintendo only a few years later in 1991.
